Edward Scott was born in 1884 in Swaffham Prior (Newmarket Q4-1884 3B:539), baptised in St Mary's Swaffham Prior on 19th April 1885, son of Edward Thomas and Eliza SCOTT(née SCOTT).

1891 census...Aged 6, he was at Lower End, Swaffham Prior with his father Edward Thomas SCOTT [29] farm labourer; his mother Eliza [30] and sisters Rose M [3], Florence G. [1] and Beatrice E. [2 months]. All were born in Swaffham Prior.

1901 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at The White Hart, Mill Hill, Swaffham Prior with his parents (father now farm labourer/licensed victualler), sisters Rose M, Florence and Beatrice; and brothers Albert J [8] and Cecil [8 months), both born in Swaffham Prior.

On 29th October 1910 in Burwell St Mary's, he married Harriet CHAPMAN [13-10-1882] of Burwell.

1911 census... Aged 26, a farm labourer, he was at Ivy Green, Swaffham Bulbeck with his wife Harriet [28] born Burwell and daughter Muriel Blanche [11-1-1911] born in Swaffham Bulbeck. His parents sisters Florence and Beatrice and brother Albert James and Cecil were at the Allix Arms Inn, Swaffham Prior.

Their 2nd daughter, Violet Kathleen, was born on 10-5-1916.


He enlisted in Newmarket.
Dying of his wounds at a hospital (there were around 15 in Rouen) and with his Army records missing, it cannot be said for certain where or when he was wounded. However his battalion were part of the attack on September 18th which swept through Templeux and over the Quarries. The attack was renewed on the 21st and the battalion remained in the line under continuous fire until the night of 24th/25th September when they were relieved by American troops.

Edward Scott is buried in St.Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, grave S:2:E:2.
